How to give your home the X-(terior) Factor*

The kid’s are back at school (finally), so now it’s time to get all those home improvement jobs you’ve been waiting to get right done. And where better to start than the outside of your home – after all, it’s what everyone visiting sees first (plus it’ll keep any nosey parents from gossiping about the state of your windows, too).

So follow these tips on how to give the outside of your home the X-terior Factor:

Your home’s entrance way can have a make or break effect on both guests and possible home buyers  It doesn't take long to spruce this area up and a few simple tweaks will give your home that much-deserved statement appeal.

Dress Up The Front Door

When we walk towards any building, the door is usually the first thing we see. By adding a lick of paint to your door, you can quickly create a focal point. Choose a colour that complements the building’s architectural style.

Replace Old Accessories

A rusty knocker or an old door number will appear shabby at the best of times. Simply cleaning down your front door and adding new accessories will make this area look a lot tidier.

Window Boxes

Adding a window box to a sash window is an easy way to inject a little colour into an exterior space. Choose a box that emanates a similar style to that of your home.

Create Perfect Symmetry

Not only is symmetry easy to arrange, it’s also pleasing to the eye. An equal arrangement of light fixtures, pot plants and front-door accents will create a welcoming entryway.

Invest In A Brand New Door

If your existing door is looking a little worse for wear, it may be easier to replace it completely. Painting a door that is scratched, chipped and warped will look unkempt, whilst a brand new wood paneled door will add a surge of life to your property.

Install Exterior Lighting

Lighting is a great tool to work with, especially if you wish to create a little ambiance  Low-voltage landscape lighting not only provides security, it also has an impact on the look and feel of your home.

Create A Miniature Garden

Just because your home lacks a large outdoor space, this shouldn't mean your front door should lack life. Container gardens are all the rage and adding a variety of pot plants to front walkway is a great way to create a welcoming appeal.

Give Your Mailbox A Makeover

If you find that an abundance of flyers and letters are cluttering up your hallway, or alternatively, your dog seems to destroy them before you arrive home, invest in a mailbox instead. Today’s mailboxes come in a variety of sizes and styles and buying into a design that echoes your personality will add a personal touch to your entrance way.

Add A Gate

In order to make your property more private, invest in a decorative and sturdy gate. Not only will this enhance your garden, it will also enhance the value of your property.
